Fire-Retardant Cable Coating in India
FIREX EC 43 stops fire travelling along your cable trays — 240 minutes of flame-propagation protection to IEC 60332-3 at a 1.6 mm coat. CBRI-certified, low smoke, no cable derating.
Where to use fire-retardant cable coating
Use EC 43 General wherever a cable fire could travel from one area to the next — the long cable highways that connect a plant, and every point where cables pass through a wall or floor.
- Cable trays, cable highways and cable galleries
- General power and control cabling
- Cables passing through sealed wall and floor openings
- General cable runs in hospitals and public buildings
- Industrial plants and data centres
- PU-foam sealed gaps (EC 43 overcoat for fire and rat resistance)
Standards and tests
| IEC 60332-3 | 240 minutes of flame-propagation protection at 1.6 mm dry-film thickness. |
|---|---|
| CSIR-CBRI | CBRI-certified. Low smoke. |
| IS 12458 | With Stanvac firestops (FM 71 / FB 250), a one-foot EC 43 cable coat closes the second fire path through every sealed opening. The FM 71 + FB 250 hybrid can extend to 4 hours with EC 43. |
| Limit | IEC 60332-3 proves flame-spread protection, not circuit survival. For circuits that must keep working, use EC 43 Survival. |
FRLS cables and FM 3971 / IEC 60332-3 coatings are typically tested for 20–40 minutes of flame retardance. EC 43 holds for 240 minutes.
Benefits
Fire does not travel along the tray
Cable sheathing stops carrying the fire, containing it to where it started and giving active systems time to find and put it out.
Longest tested flame-spread protection
240 minutes to IEC 60332-3 — six times the 40-minute maximum test requirement.
No cable derating
Tested at just 1.6 mm, so there is no reduction in cable capacity and no cracking or peeling from a 3–5 mm over-thick coat.
Low smoke
CBRI-certified and low smoke, helping keep escape routes clearer during a fire.
For fire pumps, alarms and exit lighting that must keep working in a fire, see fire-survival cable coating (FIREX EC 43 Survival). Where rats and rodents damage cables, FIREX EC 7034 is a rodent-repellent coating for cables that goes on as a topcoat.
Installation summary
Survey the routes
Mark general cable runs (EC 43 General), circuits that must survive a fire (EC 43 Survival) and rodent-prone routes (EC 7034 topcoat).
Coat the full exposed length
Apply a continuous coat along the whole exposed length of the cables to the tested 1.6 mm dry-film thickness.
Coat through every opening
Where cables pass a Stanvac firestop, a one-foot EC 43 coat is included at the seal.
Add the anti-rodent topcoat
On rodent-prone routes, add at least two coats / 0.5 mm of FIREX EC 7034 over the EC 43 build.
Follow the data sheet
Surface preparation, application method, number of coats and drying times follow the FIREX EC 43 technical data sheet and Stanvac’s application procedure.

Frequently asked questions
What is a fire-retardant cable coating?
It is a coating applied over installed cables that stops flame spreading along them. FIREX EC 43 General gives 240 minutes of flame-propagation protection to IEC 60332-3 at 1.6 mm.
Are FRLS cables not enough?
FRLS cables are designed for limited flame retardance, typically 20–40 minutes in the IEC 60332-3 test, and do not keep circuits working in a fire. EC 43 extends flame-spread protection to 240 minutes.
Does fire-retardant coating keep the circuit working?
No. The IEC 60332-3 test does not prove circuit survival. For fire pumps, alarms, ventilation and exit lighting, specify FIREX EC 43 Survival, tested to IEC 60331-21.
Will the coating reduce cable capacity?
No. EC 43 is tested at 1.6 mm dry-film thickness, so the cables do not need to be derated.
